William R. Vandyke

April 17, 1922 — June 29, 2015

William R. VanDyke, 93, of Boyers, died Monday afternoon June 29, 2015 at his residence.

A son of Harry and Sadie Shaw VanDyke he was born in Harrisville on April 17, 1922. He was a graduate of Harrisville High School.

Bill was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army.

He had 43 years of service as a machine operator at Cooper Bessemer, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church of America. He was a life member of the Slippery Rock V.F.W. and a member of Slippery Rock American Legion Post 393. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, bowling in the Early Bird League of Grove City and had been active in the Slippery Rock Senior Center.

He was first married to Sara I. Haggerty on Oct. 31, 1942 and she preceded him in death on September 10, 1993. He then married Garnet Bowser Heckethorn on June 24, 1995. She survives along with a daughter Beverly P. Sloan and her husband Don Hefferman of Mercer, two sons William E. VanDyke of Lordstown, OH and Wayne D. VanDyke and his wife Bobbi of Harrisville, a son-in-law David Coast of Harrisville, 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, a daughter Elaine J. Coast and a daughter-in-law Karen VanDyke.

Friends will be received in the Jamison Funeral Home, 117 N. Main St., Harrisville from 2-4 & 6-8 pm Thursday and from 10-10:45 a.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 11 am Friday with the Rev. Scott L. Fleming, pastor of Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church of America officiating.

Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
