Emblem

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Arthur John Slocum, of Franklin, on August 21, 2024 at Sugarcreek Care Center.

John was born in Franklin on February 9, 1932 to the late Lucian Lee and Myrna Baker Slocum. He was the fifth of seven children. John was the last surviving member of his family.

He attended elementary school in Rocky Grove and high school in Franklin. In 1950 he joined the Army National Guard and was activated into the Army. He served for two years in Germany during the Korean War.

On December 10, 1954 he was married at the old Galloway Church to the former Lorraine Sloss, a childhood friend, who survives. They celebrated 69 wonderful years together this past December.

After working for 38 and a half years as a mechanic at the former Joy Manufacturing Company, John retired in 1993. Upon his retirement he volunteered 8 hours a day, 5 days a week during the construction of the addition at Galloway Church where he was an active member.

John enjoyed traveling, taking his family on many camping experiences. He participated in a mission trip to Cuba. He also rode bicycles with the ROMEO group. John could most often be found in his garage working on something. He was well known for restoring and selling old Ford tractors as he was a Ford man through and through. John also enjoyed going to auctions and yard sales.

John was the type of man who never turned down anyone who needed help or something repaired. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him. John cherished his family and enjoyed attending activities in which his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were involved.

In addition to his beloved wife Lorraine, he is survived by his children Steve (Carrie) Slocum of Cooperstown, Debra (Jeffery) Mihleder and Ronald (Martha) Slocum both of Franklin. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; Christy Lambert, Jonathan Slocum, Ashleigh Phillips, Adam Armburger, Stephanie Gordon, Chad Mihleder, Chelsea Wolbert, Breanne Blakeslee, Joshua Slocum, and Lacey Lowman. Also left to cherish John's memory are 25 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild due in February, his sister-in law Mary Slocum, many beloved nieces and nephews, and special friends Don and Pat Young of Reno, and Doris Smith of Florida.

Preceding him in death were his parents and stepmother, Edith Slocum, and his siblings; William (Dorothy) Slocum, Bessie Slocum, Helen (Jake) Hines, Richard Slocum, Twila (Richard) Lowry, and Kathryn (Perry) Miller. John was also preceded in death by a grandson, Eric Jamison, and an infant grandson, Michael Slocum.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Huff-Guthrie Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 312 West Park Street Franklin, where family and friends will be welcome from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, August 23.

Military Honors will be rendered by the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard at the conclusion of the funeral service.

John will be laid to rest at The Franklin Cemetery following the services.
