Dr. Gene E. Rexford, 83, of Franklin, passed away at Sugar Creek Station on Tuesday July 11, 2023.
Born in Wellsville, NY on April 12, 1940 he was the son of the late Kenneth “Johnny” and Marion Rexford.
He graduated from Coudersport High School in 1958 and then went on to graduate from Lock Haven State College in 1962 with a major in Social Studies. He earned his Master’s Degree from Penn State University in 1963. In 1970, Gene graduated from Penn State once again with his Doctorate in Educational Administration.
Dr. Rexford, taught Social Studies from 1962-1966 In Warren Area School District and East Pennsboro School District. From 1966-1972 he was assistant Superintendent in the Bald Eagle area school district. Gene began working at the Franklin Area School District in 1972 as Assistant Superintendent and held that position until 1992 when he came District Superintendent until 1995. In 1995 he went to work for Riverview Intermediate Unit #6 from 1995-1999 as a Supervisor.
Gene was a lifetime member of the Penn State University Alumni Association, Member of the Franklin Rotary Club for 50 years, was a two time past President and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow two times, a board member of the Venango County Historical Society, served on the DeBence Antique Music World board, former President of the Venango and Forest County Cancer Society, served as Vice President of the former Franklin Club, member of the Northwest Foundation, former board member for Boy Scout Troop #34 and was a Meals on wheels volunteer. He also served on the United Way Board and was Vice President for VARHA and was Chairman of RSVP Advisory Council of Venango County.
Gene was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years and served on church council, served as finance chairman, usher, choir member, community dinner worker and Counter Captain.
On August 16, 1980 he married the former Priscilla Green Peterson and she survives.
Also surviving is a son Dr. Kenton D. Rexford (Lauren) of Pittsburgh, a step-son, Gregg Peterson (Dr. Tracey) of Pittsburgh; seven nieces, one nephew, several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, his sisters-in-law, Dolores Sutliff (William) and Arlene Wise (Will). He is also survived by his former wife, Carol Tanner
He was preceded in death his brother, Jerry Rexford and his wife Janet.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Huff-Guthrie Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 312 West Park St. Franklin, where family and friends are welcome from 2:00 - 4:00 & 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Friday.
A Funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 1102 Liberty St. Franklin with Pastor Jeff Little, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the Rotary Foundation and sent to the Franklin Rotary Club, P.O. Box 589, Franklin, PA 16323 or DeBence Antique Music World 1261 Liberty St. Franklin, PA 16323.
Interment will follow at Graham Cemetery.
