Evelyn Pond

January 24, 1932 — February 20, 2024

Franklin

Evelyn M. Pond, 92, of Franklin, PA passed away peacefully at 10:20 P.M. Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at UPMC Hamot after a brief illness and old age.  Evelyn was surrounded by her children until her death.

Born at 4:45 A.M. in Niagara Falls, NY, January 24, 1932, Evelyn was the daughter of the late Earl C. and Ruth E. Kirby-Wells Walker.  She was the third of seven children and the only one who was born in a hospital.  Her siblings Marilyn, Richard, Robert, William, Janice, and Carol were all born at home on the farm.  Evelyn had 12 children of her own, 22 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Evelyn lived through the Great Depression and World War II.  Life was never easy and money was always in short supply; hard work and sacrifice were just a part of life.  Evelyn always said, "Be thankful for what you have, because there are others who have much less." She was a true patriot and had a deep love and pride for her country.  She belonged to the past and remained beautifully old-fashioned, material possessions meant very little to her.  She was thoughtful, caring, and generous to the end.  Evelyn read her Bible every day and said a blessing of grace before each meal.

Evelyn had a sharp and inquisitive mind until the day she passed. She spent hours discussing politics and current events with her family.  Reading was her lifelong passion, and she would stay up reading into the wee hours of the morning.  She embraced technology so she could continue to read her books, her Kindle was always by her side.  At 92 she was still growing micro-greens on her window sill and tending to her plants. She loved to garden and grow plants from seeds or cuttings.  Evelyn spent a lifetime experimenting and researching how nature worked and what natural home remedies would work the best, always passing on that knowledge to her family.

Evelyn had a beautiful, down-home folksy voice and loved to sing country music songs, church hymns, old songs from her childhood, and countless tunes from Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, and many other musical greats from her generation. She was always hardworking, and in her younger days, she could be found in the kitchen baking bread, canning vegetables from the garden, taking walks to gather black walnuts, or making supper for the kids.  Everything she did was for her family.

Until the end, her faithful companions the family dog Rosco, who was always "getting underfoot and shaking his fur everywhere," and Smittens the Kitty were always with her.

Evelyn always looked forward to warm weather and the start of spring. Our beloved "Mom of Twelve, Mum, Mother, Aunt Peg, Gram, Grandma,” was cremated on a warm-sunny beautiful day in February, her children and family were with her until the end of the line.  We love you Mum.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
~Amen~
