Garnet Pearl Speer

Garnet Pearl Speer, 78 of Slippery Rock passed away Sunday September 29, 2013 at UMPC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh. Born February 10, 1935 in West Liberty, she was a daughter of the late Albert William and Margaret Alberta Hemphill McDeavitt. She was a 1953 graduate of Slippery Rock High School. Mrs. Speer worked 35 years for the Slippery Rock Area School District serving in many different capacities. She retired on February 14, 1997 as accounts payable clerk for the district. Throughout her career with the school district she worked in food services and also served as director of food services, switchboard operator and board secretary. Garnet enjoyed hand quilting, sewing and needlework. She was known as the family seamstress. Her and her husband enjoyed camping and traveling together especially to Florida for the winter. On March 21, 1953 she married John Speer and he survives. Also surviving is a son; Kenneth W. Speer and his wife Nancy of Slippery Rock; a daughter, Kathleen R. Speer Canady and her husband Buzz of Pine Bluffs, WY; a brother Thomas M. McDeavitt of Boynton Beach, FL; a sister, Lauretta M. McDeavitt Lindey of Grove City; four grandchildren, Jeff, Daniel, Jimmy, and Shaeleen and 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers; Floyd G. McDeavitt, Albert William McDeavitt Jr. and Jesse John McDeavitt. Family and friends welcome Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Jamison Funeral Home Inc. 117 N. Main St. Harrisville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday in the funeral home with the Rev. Loren McQueen of the West Liberty United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Prairie Cemetery.
