Franklin

Glenn R. “Dick” McElhattan, 89, of Franklin, took his final breath in the early morning of Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at the Caring Place in Franklin.

The son of the late Glenn D. and Florence Berlin McElhattan, Dick was born on December 3, 1934 in Knox, PA.

Dick was a graduate of White Memorial High School in Knox and continued to expand his educational background, spending four years at Clarion State College, getting his Master's degree at Case Western Reserve University, and achieving a Doctoral degree at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dick married the love of his life, the former Mary Master, in Knox on Saturday, February 11, 1956. They spent 68 wonderful years together.

Dick was a chemistry teacher at Rocky Grove High School and a professor at Clarion State College/University, Venango Campus. He was awarded the 1994 Outstanding Faculty Member at Clarion University. In 48 years of teaching, he left an impact on his students that will continue to inspire them for years to come.

Dick was a wonderful husband and father with a compassionate heart. In his early years, he raised beagles and was a member of the Rainbow Beagle Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and painting houses in the summertime. He is remembered by his children and grandchildren as a professional hugger, and they fondly remember days of him teaching them how to play chess. Dick was passionate about his students and always supported the Clarion sports teams. One of his biggest interests was waterskiing, and he and his wife taught over 200 people to ski. Dick and Mary loved travelling to Clearwater Beach in Florida, where they visited and spent time with their grandchildren.

He was a member of Grace Church in Rocky Grove where he sang in the church choir and participated for 18 years in the Appalachian Service Project with his wife.

Dick honorably served his country as 1st Lieutenant Artillery Officer in the United States Marines.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Master McEhattan, and three children, Brenda Sturtz (Douglass) of Franklin, Dianne Coxson (Ron) of Wendell, NC, Curtis (Teresa) McElhattan of Franklin, and a daughter in-law, Shelley Sehman of Franklin. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Aric (Angela) McElhattan, Dustin (Joanna) McElhattan, Daniel (Lindsey) McElhattan, Andrew Abrams, Benjamin Sturtz and his fiancé Michele Tolbert, Jessica (Daniel) Landis, and Alec Sturtz and his fiancé Tara Gross; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Lois Pierce and Marilyn Greer; and many loved nieces and nephews. Also surviving is James Edwards, a dear friend of the McElhattan family.
