Jim served as a trustee at Christ Church in Franklin, and served on the Building Committee after the 1985 fire destroyed the church.

He was also active in Masonic Life and was a member of Lake Myrtle Lodge 316, where he served as Chaplin for more than 25 years. He was a 32nd degree in Scottish Rite and past commander of York Rite Bodies, Chapter, Council and Commandry.
