Richard L. "Dick" Shaner, 73 of Franklin went to be with his Lord and Savior early Monday morning August 29, 2016.
Born in Franklin on June 22, 1943 he was a son of the late Harold and Mary Wise Shaner.
He was a 1961 graduate of Franklin High School.
Dick wanted to be a teacher from the time he was eight years old. He graduated from Clarion University with his Bachelor's Degree and from Edinboro University with his Master's Degree in Education. He taught 37 years at Central Elementary School, teaching fifth and second grade. Dick also coached elementary basketball and was Innovative Teacher of the Year in 1975.
He was a faithful member of Christ United Methodist Church his entire life and a member of the Goodwill Sunday School Class for 47 years. He loved singing in the choir and did so for 58 years. Dick also served on several church committees and enjoyed teaching Sunday school. For many years, he volunteered as a leader with Reverend Moffatt at youth camp.
Dick was a member of the Silver Coronet Band for many years and also served on the board for the Venango County Historical Society, as he had a great interest in genealogy. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and loved to travel throughout the United States and Europe.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Joan McCamey. They have known each other since Kindergarten. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Steven Shaner of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; a daughter, Sharon Shaner McKinney and her husband Tracey of Morgantown, WV; step-granddaughters, Nicole and Amanda; his grandsons, Seth and Caleb.
Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Agnes Johnson of Hemet, CA, and brothers-in-law, Roland McCamey and his wife Carol of Rocky Grove and James McCamey of Franklin and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother who died at birth.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Huff Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 312 West Park St. Franklin where family and friends are welcome from 1:00 - 3:00 P.M. & 6:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday.
Additional visitation will be from 10:00 - 11:00 A.M. Thursday at Christ United Methodist Church, 1135 Buffalo St. Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. in the church with Rev. Sam Wagner, Associate Church Pastor, officiating.
Interment will follow at Franklin Cemetery.
